The Shakespeare in the Park event was definitely one of my favorite opportunities that the Honors Program gave me. I've never been a true fan of Romeo and Juliet, but this play, coupled with the environment of the Gardens and being able to enjoy the company of other Honors students, really opened me up to giving experiences like this a chance. I hate to admit it, but I truly am an introvert. What this experience did for me was give me the chance to make friends of my classmates, something that I am truly thankful for. Because of this trip, I have gained at least two lifelong friends.
What I have also discovered about myself and my learning this semester is that I really like to take the constructivist approach rather than a traditional approach. Perhaps the only reason that I did not enjoy such works of literature as Romeo and Juliet is because I would have rather experienced the play myself than tried to become the director myself while reading the story. While we were discussing Romeo and Juliet in class, the discussion was much deeper than answering questions of who did what and why. To apply philosophies and dig into the intricacies of plots really made the works we read so much more than simple stories.
I was not excited about attending Shakespeare in the Park at all. I hate reading Shakespeare. I always have. So going into this event, I was ready for it to be over before it began. But as it turned out, I absolutely loved every minute of this play! I finally understood why so many people have a passion for Shakespeare. When the characters came to life (until they died of course) I saw what an amazing creation these plays are. I was shocked. It was definitely an enlightening experience. You never know until you try.
