We've Visited the Burkean Parlor

  1. This mixer which supplied delicious snacks and equally tantalizing conversation stood out as one of my favorite Honors gatherings of the Fall 2013 semester. First off, I love the fact that the first year and second year Honors students both took part in reading the summer reading assignment. I don’t recall last year the second year students engaging in this event (I could be mistaken). I liked that the freshmen and the sophomores read the same material and were able to interact with one another and share ideas. It unifies the students involved in the EQ courses I believe. Also, the chance to mingle with other Honors professors than just your EQ instructor is always a nice experience. Most of our Honors professors are highly intelligent individuals and they stretch your thoughts.

  2. The Burkean Parlor was quite an interesting experience. It was cool to get to talk about controversial subjects for once, and it be totally okay! I also enjoyed getting to talk to the professors on some of the topics, as well as other students. I must admit, I am not one who enjoys debate, and there was plenty of that going on, but it was still fun to get a feel for what everyone else's thoughts on those subjects were. It was a good way to get to know people if anything! It was also a good way to get your views out in the open, and discuss real, important, topics that we are going to have to deal with in everyday life.

  3. The Burkean Parlor was a great experience because it allowed me, as a fist semester freshmen, to talk to upperclassmen as well professors about a book that I enjoyed and was mentally stimulated by. While some of the topics were easily agreed upon some of them were very controversial and interesting. My favorite was regarding whether or not line ups should be used to convict people since this method has proved to be flawed. My favorite part of this event was that I found the conversation helpful to fully understanding some of the issues that Subliminal raised.

  4. The Burkean Parlor discussion is always neat to go to since you get to hear everyone else’s opinion and also learn who the lower class Honor’s people are. We always seem to have some interesting debates and discussions stemming from the question cards on the summer reading. I usually do not get to read everyone’s response on the blog for the summer reading so getting to discuss them in person and see other students’ ideas is interesting and informative because you hear other people’s perspectives on matters. The small group talk is my favorite over the entire group discussion because more people get to voice their opinion.

  5. I concur with Ashley, Abby, Kendall, and Anna; the Burkean Parlor discussion was a real treat. Being able to talk with students from other classes and faculty members is always exciting, especially when we are able to bring insights from different perspectives (scientific and western philosophy). The hour went by extremely fast as we discussed the death penalty, the reliability of eyewitness reports, and many more controversial topics. Like many other honors events, I walked away from this event with even more questions than I entered the conversation with. I'm so thankful that the honors program offers a unique venue for the exchange of ideas.
