Fall 2016 Convocation Speakers

Presenting the speakers for this year's HSA Convocation! We kicked things off with a warm welcome from Dr. Benton and President Hargrave, followed by some enlivening words from Dr. Weir, our 2016 Honors Teacher of the Year.

We also received spectacular presentations from senior Emily Angell and recent graduate Linzi Thompson-Bhatta, as well as a compelling Convocation Address from Dr. Jessop.
Our HSA President Talor Stewart closed the ceremony with an inspirational presidential charge.

Thanks to everyone involved for making this year's Honors Convocation a huge success!

  1. Oddly enough, this was one of my most favorite events. I remember that I felt very underdressed because I had come straight from work, but I also remember the speakers being very enjoyable. The two speakers that I most enjoyed listening to were Emily Angell and Linzi Thompson-Bhatta. It was very evident to me that both women absolutely loved the things they were presenting and it inspired and challenged me to find that flame in my life.

I remember that Emily talked about her summer studies on Native American culture. While her presentation wasn't something that I would normally be drawn to, I still felt like a moth to a flame. Her passion and happy manner really drew me into the possibility of having that sort of drive myself. I know Emily didn't have to go out of the US for this opportunity, so it is heartening to know that there are vast chances to become more cultured even in our society.

I also vividly remember Linzi's presentation. Stanford. Wow. And coming from a small place like ECU? Incredibly inspiring. What I most liked about her presentation was how evident it became that she had become a part of a community that she cherished. It was obvious that her professors had helped her out very much, but the drive she herself had was incredible to even glimpse.

In sum, this experience wasn't about the experience for me, it was about seeing a future of possibilities and the excitement of becoming who I was meant to be over the course of my college years.

  2. The Honors Convocation Ceremony was another great event that I had the opportunity to observe. I absolutely loved Linzi’s presentation! It was great to see how much she was able to accomplish through the Honors program with a little hard work. It was really inspiring, and it peeked interests in areas that I wouldn’t have thought I would be interested in. Plus, it made me really ready to study abroad. I also appreciated the time after to get to know some of the other professors in the Honors program. I feel like I made many valuable connections that night.
